Choosing between a heat pump and solar panels

Photovoltaic solar panels are much more versatile than heat pumps – they are likely to appeal to you if you use a lot of electricity for different tasks. In many cases, they are also cheaper to install than heat pumps, which makes them ideal if you’re trying to go green on a relatively modest budget. However, they are not as durable as heat pumps (especially ground source heat pumps) and may require more frequent maintenance. Furthermore, they generate less energy overall than heat pumps. Though the energy they produce has more applications than that produced by heat pumps, they produce less of it.

When you choose between a heat pump and solar panels, you should consider how much additional energy you want to generate, what uses you want to put it to, how long you hope your renewable energy system will last and how much you can afford to pay upfront.
